Upon arrival at a hostage situation, what should you do?

In a hostage situation, safety is the top priority for all responders, including EMTs. Waiting in a safe area, as outlined in the incident commander’s guidance, ensures that you are not putting yourself or others at risk while more information is gathered and the situation escalates. The incident commander has the complete overview of the scene and can provide the most accurate instructions based on the ongoing dynamics.

This approach allows law enforcement and other emergency personnel to establish control of the scene and assess the situation without adding further complications or distractions. EMTs and medical personnel are often not the first responders on the scene in potentially volatile scenarios like hostage situations; instead, they wait until it is deemed safe to enter and assist.

The other choices pose risks that can jeopardize safety; immediately assuming responsibility could lead to confusion and compromise the tactical operations of law enforcement. Leaving lights and sirens on might also attract unwanted attention or escalate the situation, and ensuring the radio is loud could distract or annoy tactical units who need clear communication. Thus, maintaining a safe distance and waiting for further instructions is the most responsible course of action in such critical incidents.
